Effects of harmful algal blooms on stress levels and immune functioning in wetland-associated songbirds and reptiles

چکیده
Harmful algal blooms (HABs), caused primarily by nutrient input from agricultural runoff, are a threat to freshwater systems worldwide, and further predicted increase in size, frequency, intensity due climate change. HABs occur annually the Western Basin of Lake Erie (Ohio, USA), these become toxic when dominated cyanobacteria that produce liver toxin microcystin. Although we making substantial inroads toward understanding how microcystin affects human health, less is known about effects on wildlife exposed HABs. Wetland-associated songbirds (barn swallows, Hirundo rustica, red-winged blackbirds, Agelaius phoeniceus) reptiles (Northern watersnakes, Nerodia sipedon, painted turtles, Chrysemys picta) were sampled wetlands chronically high levels prolonged HAB event, unexposed, control wetlands. Physiological stress several measures immune functioning compared between HAB-exposed populations. levels, measured as heterophil:lymphocyte ratios, higher barn Northern watersnakes chronic individuals, but turtles did not differ physiological individuals. Neither swallows nor blackbirds differed populations, had bactericidal capacity than snakes, lower turtles. These results suggest even do cause direct mortality wildlife, they can potentially act stressor across taxa, furthermore may compromise some species.

Models of Harmful Algal Blooms
Models used to study harmful algal blooms are a subset of those used to examine more general planktonic processes. Most models have been heuristic, examining the likelihood of certain processes generating a harmful algal bloom. Several models have been more closely coupled to field data and have been used to gain insights into the dynamics underlying the observations. As better physical and bio...

The five most commonly recognized Harmful Algal Bloom related illnesses include Ciguatera poisoning, Paralytic Shellfish poisoning, Neurotoxin Shellfish poisoning, Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning and Amnesic Shellfish poisoning. Although they are each the product of different toxins, toxin assemblages or HAB precursors these clinical syndromes have much in common. Exposure occurs through the cons...

The world's oceans cover 70 % of the Earth's surface, and their dominant populations, both numerically and biomasswise, belong to microscopic protists and prokaryotes. The marine phytoplanktons are major components of both groups and are, by definition, high dispersal taxa with large population sizes. Small photosynthetic organisms are responsible for the bulk of primary production in oceanic a...
